Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre Educator's Workshop

Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre - July 25th 2024 (Durban, South Africa)

In a world full of problems, we seek new, creative solutions and innovations from young

people around the world. Technology is advancing rapidly and shaping every aspect of our world – present and future. A solid STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education is the foundation of which to build and empower our future engineers, scientists, clinicians, and programmers to solve complex problems for the betterment of society. Girls and women in STEM are still not able to realize their full potential in STEM educational and professional journeys. Our vision is for every young person, especially girls and young women, to be empowered with the STEM insights and knowledge to realize their dreams and contribute to improving our world for all.

Please join a workshop focused on engaging STEM teachers on the dynamics of STEM education in primary and secondary schools in South Africa. The workshop will provide a global overview of STEM education and the challenges and opportunities facing learners in achieving their full potential for success in school, and what follows in tertiary education and the workplace. The workshop is intended for teachers who instruct in STEM subjects at community-based schools. Globally, the participation of girls in STEM subjects in school remains a challenge, as this also impacts how girls engage with STEM programs at university and the STEM careers they may select into. Therefore, the main focus of the workshop is to understand how girls, particularly girls from underserved communities, engage with STEM subjects in school, what challenges they face and how these may be overcome. The workshop will take the form of presentations, questions, discussion and debate with the active participation of all guest attendees. The workshop will also include guest speakers from South Africa and the United States (via Zoom).
